Introduction
For people who are interested in genealogy often times will discover that one special ancestor stands out from all the others. This ancestor may stand out simply because there is an abundance of information written about them or because we discover something very intriguing about this person. Often times in the course of months and years of research a connection is formed with that special ancestor. Generally, in order for information to have been written and saved about a person, that person must have accomplished something notable, whether good or bad or indifferent, to make it worthwhile of recording. In the Wheelock genealogy we have such a person who stands out from all the other ancestors and that person is Cyrus Hubbard Wheelock. Cyrus Hubbard Wheelock lived a very full and interesting life during the 19th century. Luckily for his descendants there is an abundance of literature written about him that makes chronicling his life possible and worthwhile.
To briefly summarize the life story of this man, Cyrus was born in New York in 1813 with his mother dying when he was only 6 weeks old. He comes from a strict Puritan family. Cyrus became a whaler fisherman and ship captain out of New Bedford, Connecticut at very young age. Soon thereafter Cyrus joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and became one of the early leaders of the Church and was a very close friend with Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS (Mormon) Church. In fact, Cyrus labors with the Governor of Illinois to try and protect Joseph Smith from being murdered by the mob and actually secretly gave Smith a six-shooter pistol to use for protection. Joseph Smith used this pistol during a gunfight before he is murdered by the mob. It was said by many people that Cyrus was a very gifted orator. After the Martyrdom of Joseph Smith, Cyrus completed three very successful missions to England. In England he was a church leader and President over many Church Conferences including those in Manchester, Liverpool and Preston. His impact on many of these people is such that many of the early church converts named their sons after Cyrus. One such person was his nephew, Cyrus E. Dallin who went on to become a famous artist and sculptor. After his second mission, Cyrus came back to the United States and became a captain of a wagon train that ended up crossing the western plains into the Rocky Mountains and into Utah. This wagon company consisted of over 50 wagons and Cyrus was responsible for over 400 pioneers. Cyrus again crossed the plains three years later after his third and final mission to England and just two days after his arrival back in Salt Lake he helped form a rescue party and goes back out in the mountains during harsh winter conditions to save the lives of hundreds of people who were immigrating to Utah in handcart companies and who were dying of cold and starvation. He is one of the primary leaders and the official chaplain of the now famous rescue party. Cyrus was known to be a gifted orator who encouraged the beleaguered immigrants to push on and he was a first class scout often leading advance parties to search out the handcart companies. In fact, he was one of 3 men who first discovered the Willie Handcart Company. Cyrus also helped settle new towns in Utah and was appointed to other missions within the United States. He personally corresponds with Mormon Church Presidents, including Brigham Young.
Cyrus is also very well liked and trusted by the Indians that live near his community of Mount Pleasant. This area in and around Sanpete Valley actually experienced the most numerous Indian depredations in the Utah Territory. In fact, the very infamous Indian named Antonga Black Hawk along with one hundred braves came to the home of Cyrus H. Wheelock prior to surrendering himself to end the very famous Utah Black Hawk War.
Cyrus was a practicing polygamist and had many wives some of whom lived in different places. On account of having lived the life of a polygamist, there have been stories handed down through the generations that Cyrus was not often present in the households and therefore neglected his families. Still others say that Cyrus was a very dedicated father and was generous with both his family and his associates. Nevertheless, Cyrus H. Wheelock was very well known and very popular in his communities where he lived and with whom he was associated with. Cyrus was by in large a person who earned a place himself a place in history as a very influential person and as a well respected person whom accomplished a great deal in his life. Cyrus H. Wheelock has earned my vote as they most notable ancestor in the Wheelock genealogy.
The basic purpose of this work was to compile all the information that is known and available to me about Cyrus H. Wheelock and to structure the data into a date timeline format or chronology to be used as a reference guide of the life of Cyrus H. Wheelock. There is some information provided herein that contains fragmented or partial information and may appear confusing, but is included to provide all the information known about him that may later help to find more clues about the life of Cyrus H. Wheelock. I am most grateful to Joan Morris (Great Granddaughter of Cyrus H. Wheelock) for providing me with a big portion of the raw data. I also owe much gratitude to Betty Bertelson (Great Granddaughter of Cyrus H. Wheelock) for providing family detail information that was important to include. I also thank my wife, Kay Gillespie, for her patience and understanding with trying to understand my passion for genealogy and Cyrus. Some of the text herein is fragmented and contains incorrect language but I have left it for the most part. This is especially true in his diaries and during some of the religiously written letters.
In my genealogy hobby, putting this document together has taken a huge amount of dedication, time and work. The amount of time needed was primarily due the painstaking task of having to go through the hundreds of pages of information that may ultimately only contain a tidbit of actual information regarding Cyrus H. Wheelock. To be honest there have also been periods of time that I lacked motivation to complete this tedious task. In the long run though I believe that it is well worth the efforts because I know that many in the family, now and in the future, will enjoy knowing more about Cyrus H. Wheelock. My goal is that this data could be used as a tool and stepping-stone to find more information about Cyrus and to ultimately write an extensive biography of his life. Cyrus lived such a very full life that his experiences could very well be documented with enough interesting chapters including his experiences as a whaling ship captain, hymn writer, leader of a 400 person wagon company across the plains, friends with Chief Black Hawk himself and one of the primary persons in a very famous rescue party responsible for saving hundreds of lives. All of this provided factual information combined with the actual history of the day combined with an emotional storyline would, in my estimation, be enough to warrant a great and exciting book and movie. Why not? Cyrus H. Wheelock was quite the fellow to say the least.
This is not a published book so the pictures are not credited. This information is just for family reference and at this point please do not publish any of the pictures.
I hope that this collection of information generates continued interest in the life of Cyrus H. Wheelock and that his descendants will enjoy reading and knowing more about his life.
