Peter Gillespie Written by Anna Peddicord Gillespie Peter Gillespie, father of John Gillespie, was born March 1792 or 1794 in Muiravonside, Sterling, Scotland, the son of Peter Gillespie and Margaret Tenoch. He was married to Martha Scott in Scotland about the year 1818. They were both converted to the Latter Day Saints Church in Scotland in 1849. They emigrated to the United States and to Utah arriving in Salt Lake City, Utah October 12, 1852 and came to Tooele to settle. They spent two years at Council Bluffs, Iowa as they were crossing the plains. They were the parents of fourteen children, all born in Scotland. At the election held in Tooele County in August 1855, Peter was elected a “fence viewer”. Early in 1857 the reformation assumed important features at Tooele. Thus nearly all the Saints, constituting the first and fourth districts of Tooele were rebaptised by Peter Gillespie and Eli B. Kelsey and on the following day (March 23) the members of the second and third districts were rebaptised. A general time of rejoicing followed confirmation meetings held on two successive days and the time was spent with preaching, vocal and instrumental music. No other history seems available on this man but it is thought that he moved with his son John Gillespie to Salt Lake City, who worked as a stone cutter on the Salt Lake Temple. It is thought that he remained in that City and died there. Cemetery records for this information are to be investigated. He was sealed to his wife in Salt Lake, Feb 17, 1854.
